Solomon Islands has slammed the offer of the Albanese government to help fund its country’s elections, labelling it an assault on its democracy. Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare claims the island country can't afford to hold an election by its May 2023 due date and hold the Pacific Games in the same year. The Sogavare government was due to hold a parliamentary vote this week to change the constitution and allow for the delay. Australia's government has offered financial aid as well as $17 million to help host the Pacific Games. The Solomon Islands government says the offer is inappropriate and would constitute political interference.
