The apparent willingness of China’s President Xi Jinping to talk with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and US President Joe Biden at the G20 conference in Bali is raising hope it could lead to a thawing of relations between China and the West. However, the tension between China and Taiwan has only escalated significantly in the past months with the visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the island and subsequent military drills conducted by both countries.
