Turkey’s ruling party lost control of Istanbul on June 23 after the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) candidate, Ekrem Imamoglu, won 54 percent of the vote in the city’s mayoral election with nearly all ballots counted, local media reported. The election was a re-run after Imamoglu’s March victory was annulled following complaints from the ruling AK party about alleged irregularities. His opponent, former prime minister Binali Yildirim, conceded, Daily Sabah reported.
