The Immigration Minister has refused to explain why he didn't use his discretionary powers to block contentious UK man Raheem Kassam from speaking at a conservative conference in Australia next month, sparking debate on Thursday. Kassam has previously made hate speech comments about Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, which he has apologised for, admitting they were "violent", "crass" and "unacceptable." Liberal MP David Coleman told Sky News the government was seeking to strengthen the immigration character test to help “keep Australians safe”. Mr Coleman said “the government has cancelled 4,700 visas under the provisions of the migration act” in the past six years and “Labor in the preceding years cancelled 700”. The Liberal MP said anyone who has been convicted of a serious offence and was not a citizen, “shouldn’t be in Australia”. Image: News Corp Australia
