Child sex offenders would face mandatory jail time under legislation to be re-introduced into federal parliament next week. The proposed shake-up of sentencing laws is aimed at people who commit offences online and overseas, which fall outside state jurisdictions. Attorney General Christian Porter said 28 per cent of people convicted of child sex crimes in the past year spent no time behind bars, which is "out of step" with community expectations. Under the guidance of the financial intelligence agency, there have been more than 40 referrals to police resulting in arrests.
