Joyce says “divestiture powers” will curb market power of electricity companies

Liberal MP Barnaby Joyce speaks to the media in Canberra about the government's intention to introduce "big stick" legislation to curb anti-consumer behaviour by electricity companies. The legislation will give the government the power to force companies to divest a portion of their assets if found to be operating against the benefit of electricity consumers. Mr Joyce believes that the "big stick" will bring down prices. "How they say we don't care..we can exploit the market and drive the price of power up, then screw you..you're going to pay as much as possible ..then we will come up with a piece of legislation that will put the weight back on you; you hurt them then we will hurt you" Mr Joyce says.
