Labor has put itself in a ‘dangerous’ position by attempting to block Tamil deportation

Former Labor minister Stephen Conroy says his own party has put itself in a “dangerous” position by urging Scott Morrison to block the deportation of the Tamil family. The Labor powerbroker and Sky News commentator said by opposing the family’s deportation on “compassionate” grounds the party would “set a standard you then have to be prepared to live by”. In response to questions about whether Labor’s border policy had now changed, Mr Conroy said focusing on the specific individual case was a “”dangerous place for the opposition to put itself in”. “A family can fail every single legal test under both governments and lose every single case through the high court and then because there is a compassionate argument you then set a new standard,” he said on Sky News today. “I think this is a dangerous place for the opposition to have put itself in.” Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese has called for Prime Minister Scott Morrison to intervene and block the Tamil family’s deportation but has not revealed whether Labor’s formal border policies have changed
