Bushfire recovery package leading ‘critical’ environmental restoration

Environment Minister Sussan Ley says while it is not possible to future-proof the fire affected environment before the next bushfire season, the government’s recovery package will “really make a difference”. The government has allocated $150 million of its $650 million bushfire recovery package to rebuilding natural habitats and helping the environment to recover after being devastated by Australia’s bushfire season in an effort to prepare it for future disasters. Ms Ley told Sky News the funding would assist in preparing the environment in the “longer term that will see it be more resilient in the face of bushfire that of course are going to be more frequent”. She said scientists would be leading the effort to restore affected habitats with flora and fauna that would flourish and boost the quality of the area. “For the people who live in this area, the environment is inextricably linked with the places they love, the visitors they get and their sense of well-being, not to mention their regional economy,” she said. “Immediately work will be done to fence off those areas to keep them precious and then to start reintroduce the wildlife. “So knowing what’s going on in every part of our natural environment and people involved in that is critical in securing its future.” Image: News Corp Australia
