Australia is ‘standing at the back of the pack’ when it comes to emissions cuts

America, Japan, and Canada have committed to cutting emissions by at least 40 per cent by 2030 but Australia is “trying to weasel our way out” of doing so, according to Climate Council of Australia’s Professor Will Steffen. “We’ve got to make commitments on that order or even more if we want to keep warming well below two degrees and we know the danger of going above two degrees,” he told Sky News. Professor Steffen said Australia is “standing at the back of the pack standing still” when it comes to making climate commitments and is not convinced by the recent pledges to be more eco-friendly. “I think if we do make much more vigorous and ambitious pledges by Glasgow that would be a good development but I don’t read the tea leaves quite with the same optimism," he said. “I think we’re trying to weasel our way out of making any firm commitments which would put us right at the back of the pack and put us in a really bad position not only terms of climate but also economically.”
