While COVID-19 has made it difficult for countries to respond to the Myanmar crisis the global community failed to respond to the nation’s military threat long before the pandemic struck, according to international lawyer Chris Sidoti. “This is a very long standing issue, it’s not just a recent one,” he said. “The COVID pandemic has been overwhelming in international affairs over the last 12 months and it will continue so for the foreseeable future, but unfortunately the global community’s failure to deal adequately with the Myanmar military long precedes COVID. “Australia now needs to find its voice but also to find the will to undertake the actions that are necessary to send a very clear message to the military with the support of ASEAN states that this kind of behaviour is no longer going to be tolerated. “It’s been accepted for far too long.”
