The ‘credibility of the US criminal justice system’ hinges on the Chauvin trial verdict

The credibility of the United States justice system hinges on the verdict of the Derek Chauvin murder trial says Cypress College Political Science Professor Peter Mathews. Professor Mathews said the United States was “physically and emotionally connected” to the trial and the qualified immunity officers get needs to be amended to protect citizens’ rights. He told Sky News there needs to be a discussion about how to “redo qualified immunity in the way that will still protect the police officers but most importantly protect the public they’re meant to be serving, especially based on racial profiling.” Professor Mathews also said the overlap of the trial with the 53rd anniversary of Dr Martin Luther King Jr’s death mattered as the trial questions whether George Floyd was racially profiled. “Here’s the question, was the person’s colour of their skin, George Floyd’s skin colour, the main reason he was basically stepped on to death?”
