‘We’re ready for you’: Queensland tourism operators keen to ‘make up for lost ground’

Queensland Tourism Industry Council CEO Daniel Gschwind says tourism operators are ready to welcome back visitors to the state and keen to “make up or lost ground” after the snap lockdown. “The airlines told us that everybody held onto their airline bookings till the last minute and subsequently obviously travelled now or will travel because the lockdown has been lifted,” he said. “All the regions of Queensland are ready to welcome visitors from interstate. There are plenty of flights coming in”. Mr Gschwind told Sky News 200,000 of the federal government’s 800,000 half-price airline tickets have already been sold and a “big portion” has gone to Queensland. “We’re ready to welcome visitors, we’re ready to make up for lost ground and we hope we have a great Easter and we can show everyone a great time up here”. Mr Gschwind said the snap lockdown caught tourism operators by surprise since they had been led to believe they would be “a thing of the past”. “This latest lockdown was certainly a blow and every time it happens it dents consumer confidence and it takes a little longer to rebuild that consumer confidence”.
