Crews Survey Growing Headland Amid Volcanic Eruptions on La Palma

Eruptions continued at the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma as lava flowed from a new fissure on Friday, October 1. Lava from the erupting volcano was creating a new headland as it poured into the sea, emitting gases that officials warned could be toxic for locals. Video taken on October 1 shows the misty headland, according to Salvamento Maritimo, Spain’s sea search and rescue agency. Scientists collected samples of the water around the island to test its temperature and chemistry after the introduction of lava to the ocean. La Provincia reported that the new headland was over 17 hectares in area. The lava flows destroyed about 1,000 buildings and were threatening another 1,200 by October 1, according to El Pais.
