UK MPs pay tribute to Sir David Amess

The UK House of Commons has gathered to pay tribute to murdered politician Sir David Amess. The veteran politician was stabbed to death while meeting constituency voters last week. A morning of prayers was followed by a minute's silence and politicians were given the opportunity to share their memories of their colleague. Prime Minister Boris Johnson led tributes to David Amess – vowing to "cherish his memory" and "celebrate his legacy". In honour of the Conservative MP – the Queen has announced Southend – in Essex – will be granted city status. David Amess campaigned tirelessly for Southend to be a city during his 38 years as a backbench MP in parliament. The town was one of several competing for city status as part of the Queen's platinum jubilee celebrations next year.
