May braces for crucial day of Brexit voting

UK Prime Minister Theresa May is bracing for another crucial day of voting that could change the course of Brexit, with several amendments tabled for her 'Plan B' deal. On Wednesday, MPs will vote on 14 amendments, which include time extensions to prevent a no-deal Brexit, 'alternative arrangements' for the so-called 'Irish backstop' and provisions for a second referendum if negotiations end in a no-deal. Ms May has encouraged MPs to back the Irish backstop amendment in order to show the EU her Brexit deal will attract support if it is altered or removed. The Irish border has proved a significant hurdle for Brexit negotiations, with the backstop policy seeking to protect the 1998 Good Friday Agreement and avoid the return of a 'hard border'.
