Facebook, Google ‘indifferent’ about scandals

Major social media companies such as Facebook and Google are showing a "disturbing indifference" about what is posted on their platforms, according to Australia’s chief regulator. Australian Competition and Consumer Commission boss Rod Simms this week handed down a scathing report that examines the impact of social media platforms and search engines on the digital media and marketing space. The ACCC made 23 recommendations in its report, including forcing the tech giants to share revenue with traditional media and implement an anti-fake news code of conduct. Mr Simms told Sky News these companies “don’t take enough responsibility, therefore governments and regulators need to step in.” The government has promised to implement at least some of the findings, with Treasurer Josh Frydenberg claiming Facebook and Google "need to be held to account."
