‘Ludicrous’ not all women can have an abortion

New South Wales Health Minister Brad Hazzard says "it’s time for Australia to no longer have a criminal approach to the issue of women’s health and abortion". Abortion could soon be decriminalised in New South Wales with a new bill set to be put to parliament as early as Tuesday. Premier Gladys Berejiklian said she would support the bill, expected to be introduced to parliament by Alex Greenwich. It’s “ludicrous” that not all women can receive the same medical attention in Australia, the health minister said. The bill is “not about encouraging people to have an abortion but about taking it out of the crimes act”. The new bill will include the provision to access an abortion in the first 22 weeks of pregnancy. Mr Hazzard says after 22 weeks a woman must consult with two doctors and, from there, "look at a range of factors to determine whether or not it is appropriate to terminate the pregnancy".
