Cost of Australian housing driving inequality

The poorest fifth of Australian workers are pouring more of their income into housing costs than ever before. Analysis from the Grattan Institute shows 29 per cent of incomes were spent on housing costs, up from 21.9 per cent in 1995. For the richest fifth, in 2018 9.4 per cent of gross income was spent on housing costs, compared to 9.3 per cent in 1995. Disposable income also grew twice as much for the richest Australians when compared to the nation's poorest. Image: Getty
