Protesters gather outside Melb court in support of Tamil family

September 4, 2019. Protesters gather as Dr Niro Kandasamy from the Tamil Refugee Council speaks outside the Federal Court in Melbourne about the fight to prevent the deportation of a Tamil family from Australia. The Federal Circuit Court will on Wednesday hear the case for two-year-old Tharunicaa, who is currently detained on Christmas Island with her parents Priya and Nadesalingam and four-year-old sister Kopika. Kandasamy says the community has spoken in support of the family and protecting their right to stay in Australia. "They have every right under the UN convention to remain here," she tells the protesters. The protesters sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Kopika's favourite song, as they wait outside the court.
