A Tamil family at the centre of a deportation case will remain in Australia until at least 4pm on September 18 after a federal court delayed the hearing. The family was due to learn on Friday whether they would be deported to Sri Lanka. Priya and her husband arrived separately to Australia by boat several years ago, reportedly fleeing persecution in Sri Lanka. However when Priya's temporary visa expired in 2018, the family was taken from its home in Biloela and held in a Melbourne detention centre before being transferred to Christmas Island last Saturday. They were granted an injunction after lawyers argued the couple's youngest daughter had never been assessed for a protection visa.
