Trump’s meeting with the Taliban would have been ‘damaging’

Sky News contributor Bruce Wolpe says it isn’t damaging that talks between US President Donald Trump and the Taliban at Camp David were cancelled because “it would have been damaging if it had occurred”. President Trump cancelled secret plans to host a Taliban delegation in the US at the weekend after the militant group admitted to killing a US soldier. Mr Wolpe told Sky News the premise to get to a peace agreement was “troubled at the outset” as there were no face-to-face discussions between the Taliban and the Afghan government. “A lot of people in Washington were very troubled that Camp David would have been used for a meeting with the Taliban three days before the 18th anniversary of 911,” he said. “The whole thing wasn’t sitting well and Trump has exited this negotiation.” Image: AP
