Govt to ‘build back trust in charities’ following bushfire complications

Liberal Senator Zed Seselja says the government is committed to “strengthening trust in charities again”. Trust in charities wavered after millions of dollars that was donated to various charities was tied up in legal complications late last year. Senator Seselja told Sky News “there’s a number of measures we’ve announced in our response, both in building trust back and making it easier for charities to do what they do”. The Morrison government announced it would expand powers for the regulator – The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission – which included mandatory disclosure of salaries and director remunerations. People with criminal records for child sex abuse, terrorism financing or fraud will also be banned from charity boards. “This is about making sure the community, when they make a donation to their favourite charity, know exactly what’s happening with it,” he said.
