Long Lines Form Outside Welfare Office in Sydney as Businesses Told to Close

Offices for Australia’s national welfare service, Centrelink, were flooded with people on Monday, March 23, as the government ordered many non-essential businesses to close. The long queues came as media reported the national myGov website had crashed due to “unprecedented demand” as Australians attempted to access welfare and other services online. On March 22, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced a national shutdown of non-essential services. Venues such as pubs, gyms and churches would close by midday on Monday.
