Heavy job losses expected in Qld tourism sector as borders remain closed

The Palaszczuk government is standing firm on the state's decision to maintain border closures despite figures suggesting 30,000 jobs could be lost in the tourism industry by the end of next month. Queensland Chief Health Officers maintained border closures would be in place until September, insisting it was working to ensure there would be no new spike of the virus as a result of interstate travel. New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian said it was not be in the national interest for borders to remain closed, pushing for travel to resume between the states. "I don't very much care what other states do. New South Wales will welcome visitors from across the country," Ms Berejiklian said. Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham weighed in and said there was no medical advice warranting extended border closures. Image: News Corp Australia
