‘Too many charges’ for restaurants, cafes to reopen

Australian chef and restaurateur Luke Mangan says “the restaurant business has too many charges” which is making it harder for hospitality services to reopen after the coronavirus crisis. Al fresco dining could be an option for cafes and restaurants in NSW as the government considers ways to assist their reopening while adhering to restrictions. While he said outdoor dining was a good option, Mr Mangan told Sky News it also created additional costs for restaurant owners. “Some councils and governments can put in excessive charges for you to have a chair out on the street,” he said. “We could lose up to 30 to 40 per cent of restaurants in the next few months,” he said. “We need all the help we can get and people are entertaining in corporate offices and things like that, we want them to come back into our restaurants, entertain them there and not be penalised for it.” Image: Getty
