Darwin Port lease under scrutiny in the wake of Belt and Road deal termination

The Darwin Port lease with China will face further scrutiny after changes to the Foreign Relations Act pass parliament according to Liberal MP Dave Sharma. It comes after the Commonwealth used sweeping new veto laws introduced last year to scrap Victoria's Belt and Road agreement with China. Mr Sharma told Sky News the Darwin Port lease is a “slightly different deal” because it is a lease agreement rather than a commercial arrangement. “I think it needs some further scrutiny," he told Sky News. “The changes we’ve made to the Foreign Relations Act will allow deal such as that one to be reviewed once that legislation is fully passed through the Parliament."
