‘Insufficient’: Biden Administration pushing Australia to take further climate action

The Biden Administration has labelled Australia’s current climate action “insufficient” and has urged Prime Minister Scott Morrison to commit to more aggressive emissions reduction targets. “It’s insufficient to follow the existing trajectory and hope that they will be on a course to deep decarbonisation and getting to net zero emissions by mid-century,” a Biden official said. “At the moment I think our colleagues in Australia recognise there is going to have to be a shift.” Liberal MP Dave Sharma said from 2005 to 2020 Australian emissions have dropped 19 per cent, American emissions have dropped 10 per cent and Canadian and New Zealand emissions have dropped by less than one per cent. “Australia’s actually got a good track record," he pointed out. Mr Sharma also noted Mr Morrison and Energy Minister Angus Taylor had engaged in "productive conversations" with President Biden and US special climate envoy John Kerry.
