European Super League formation has ‘always been seen as a bargaining chip’

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has vowed to do everything he can to stop the breakaway European Super League from going ahead after 12 of England’s soccer teams joined the separatist group. The formal establishment of the European Super League, intended to rival the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), has been “muted for quite some time” according to former Manchester United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich. “This has been muted for quite some time by the so-called super clubs of the European football scene going all the way back to the ‘90s,” he told Sky News. “It’s always been seen as a bargaining chip for the clubs to get more money out the pie, if you like, that UEFA generates for the competition but this is the furthest that it’s ever went.” Mr Bosnich said the founding teams in the European Super League are big draw cards for UEFA but are not necessarily winners but warns the clubs should be careful about alienating their fanbase. “The mere notion that teams could get left out of a competition is anathema to everything we stand for as footballs and we’ve got to be very careful about that because fans can do without their football but I do not believe football can do without its fans.”
