Cornerstone Group Senior Director James Cullen has raised concerns about the breakdown in the “broader relationship” between Australia and China and its long-term impact on the economy once COVID-19 stimuluses end. He said in particular he was concerned about the ramifications for regional areas if Australia no longer had a trading relationship with China in a few years’ time. “China has been such an important market for us for decades now, when we get through COVID and the extra stimuluses that are in the economy, what’s the impact going to be for regional communities because of the worsening … economic and diplomatic relationship between Australia and China.” Mr Cullen also pointed out it was “inevitable” the federal government would cut Victoria’s ties with the Belt and Road deal once the national interest legislation was passed.
