Authorities and scientists surveyed the delta of volcanic lava protruding into the sea off La Palma in Spain’s Canary Islands on October 6, footage shows. Members of the Servicio de Maritimo collaborated with Involcan scientists to collect measurements of the gases on Wednesday, the Guardia Civil said on Twitter. On October 5, the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute said they were analyzing aerosol samples collected from “the first day the lava reached the sea” in hopes they could give “information on the chemistry and acidity of the plume”. More than 420 hectares and 726 buildings had been affected by the volcano’s eruption as of Tuesday, according to La Palma council. Credit: Guardia Civil via Storyful
