Calls for regulation against Facebook

A whistleblower who accused Facebook of putting 'profits before people' has told US Congress it harms children and threatens democracy. The testimony from a former senior Facebook tech employee – Frances Haugen – comes as the social media giant recovers from a major worldwide outage which saw millions of users unable to use Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Ms Haugen told Congress Facebook systematically ignores its own research which has told them internally of the damage Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram are having on people – specifically teenage girls. Ms Haugen was until May a Facebook employee – she wasn't fired so had no axe to grind with the global company – she made a decision to expose what she has seen going on inside the company. The extraordinary revelations could be a turning point for the company – as the social media giant is a company that monitors itself – it is not independently regulated.
