Muslim reform must start with taking sides within the house of Islam, according to the founder of the American Islamic Forum of Democracy. M. Zuhdi Jasser’s Muslim Reform Movement declaration outlines principles that come from the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and Dr Jasser says Muslims who follow these principles ‘are on our side’. On the other hand, Dr Jasser says Muslims who believe in Islamism, or Political Islam, ‘are not our allies, they are adversaries’. Dr Jasser told Outsiders it’s important to work with Muslims who are inspired by liberty, and it’s necessary to hold passages from the Quran accountable ‘to 21st century realities’.
