NZ won’t let Google off the hook for naming accused backpacker murderer

New Zealand is heaping pressure on Google to overhaul its system that was responsible for breaching a major suppression order. Google named the man accused of murdering British backpacker Grace Millane in an email to subscribers featuring trending topics in New Zealand, in December 2018. The country’s Justice Minister Andrew Little says Google’s move on Friday to suspend the service responsible, seven months after the suppression breach, doesn’t address the root of the problem. ‘What they’re doing is suspending the service that publishes the information. That’s not fixing the basic problem, which is the algorithm they’ve got that hoovers up the information and then spits it out,’ Mr Little has told Sky News. He hopes to meet with Google and his international counterparts in coming weeks to discuss practical steps to prevent another breach. Image: Getty
