Former Labor minister Stephen Conroy says ‘the government has a lot to answer for in how it classifies documents’. Addressing the freedom of information debate, Mr Conroy told Sky News that ‘often material that is leaked is just embarrassing for the government but doesn’t have any national security implications’. Mr Conroy says politicians use national security as an excuse to hide information from the public that they’re embarrassed about. ‘The fact that someone has mentioned that Donald Trump is an idiot is hardly a national secret or security threat, it’s just embarrassing for the office,’ he says.
