Labor MP Andrew Leigh says ‘all the evidence I’ve read suggests [a cashless welfare card] won’t create a single additional job’. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said his government was moving to roll-out the cashless debit card for Australians on welfare but would await results from program trials. Mr Leigh said “there are concerns that it has adverse impacts on financial management and Aboriginal people’s sense of autonomy”. “This seems to have more adverse impacts than positive benefits,” he said.
