State Dinners are ‘watched very carefully’

The fact Scott Morrison is only the second person US President Donald Trump has hosted a State Dinner for is “testament to the mateship” between Australia and the United States, according to University of California professor John Lawrence. While it wasn’t unusual for administrations in decades past to host many State Dinners, Mr Lawrence believes “things might have changed after 9/11” and “the relationships between leaders took on a certain gravitas” after the tragedy. “The idea of whom is given one of these dinners is watched very carefully,” he said.
