Firefighters are set to take advantage of cooler conditions this Sunday and much-needed rain is expected to arrive in the early afternoon — providing some relief for fatigued firefighters in East Gippsland. Air quality has dramatically improved since Saturday with thick smoke blanketing the region and creating poor visibility. So far 1,100 people stranded in Mallacoota have been evacuated — an area which was plunged into darkness in apocalyptic scenes where embers rained from the sky. While the number of emergency warnings has fallen, dozens of fires remain alight and numerous roads remain closed preventing movement. Temperatures are expected to soar again next weekend.
