The first British rugby league player to come out as gay says he is “shocked and disappointed” at Israel Folau’s signing with French club Catalans Dragons in the Super League. Criticising the controversial former Wallabies star on Twitter, Wakefield Trinity player Keegan Hirst said his vocal opposition had “nothing to do with beliefs” but “everything to do with homophobia”. "Our great game is tasked with fighting against homophobia and standing up for the values it puts such high stock in," he said. "It shows none of the bravery, camaraderie or integrity RFL expects from its players, staff and fans."
