Kobe Bryant an ‘icon’ on and off the basketball court

CNN reporter Conor Powell says there has been a “steady stream of people for 24 hours” honouring NBA legend Kobe Bryant at the Los Angeles Staples Centre. Shockwaves were felt across the global sporting community after basketball star Kobe Bryant was killed in a helicopter crash on Monday. There were no survivors among the nine people on board the aircraft, including the sporting star's 13-year-old daughter, Gianna. “A lot of people have been talking about what Kobe Bryant meant to them, obviously he is a great basketball player but he really has become an icon in the city of Los Angeles in the last few years because of what he did off the court,” Mr Powell told Sky News. “He was well-known for winning championships but in the last couple years he was really starting to transition into a second career. “He had won an Academy Award for a short film he did, he wrote a children’s book, he was very active in the community coaching his daughter’s basketball team, doing a lot of community service. “A lot of people are in shock and disbelief that Kobe Bryant is dead.” Image: AP
