Recent Rainfall Lures Pelicans Back to Barwon River in Outback New South Wales

Hundreds of pelicans were seen congregating on the Barwon River in Brewarrina on March 6 after recent rain had brought new life to the waterway. Brewarrina recorded 41 mm (1.6 inches) of rainfall on March 5 and another 16 mm (0.6 inches) on March 6. Just two months ago the Barwon River was dried up near Brewarrina by years of drought. The 36 months from March 2017 to February 2020 was recorded by the Bureau of Meteorology as the driest such period on record for the Murray-Darling Basin, which the Barwon River is a part of. While the widespread rain from ex-cyclone Esther has eased drought conditions across western New South Wales, the Bureau of Meteorology says the region has received less than 50 percent of the average rainfall for the period between August 2019 and March 2020.
