More than 110 fires were burning across New South Wales with over 50 yet to be contained on January 2 during what has been described as the state’s worst bushfire season on record. Firefighters worked to make the most of more favourable conditions to protect properties before deteriorating conditions were expected to hit on January 4. A Bushfire ‘watch and act’ alert was in place for the Currowan Fire in the Shoalhaven district of the state. The Rural Fire Service warned that “fire continues to burn towards a number of areas around Nowra and the Princes Hwy” in the area.
