Seven people are confirmed as dead and hundreds of homes are thought to have been lost in devastating bushfires that struck the New South Wales South Coast on Tuesday, December 31. Deadly blazes swept through several towns in the Batemans Bay region during the catastrophic day of bushfires, with locals and visitors forced to shelter on beaches as fires approached. In video posted to Facebook on January 2 by the Batemans Bay fire brigade, smoke and flames can be seen surrounding the crew as they drive through heavily forested areas south of the town on the Tuesday.
