A kookaburra was spotted taking advantage of morning rain in Sydney, as authorities hoped the wet conditions would help extinguish fires to the city’s west and south-west. The rain fell across the Sydney area, with Penrith receiving the highest overnight total of 18 millimetres. Thunderstorms with further, heavy rain were forecast for the Sydney area on the afternoon and evening of January 16. Credit: Julie Keating via Storyful
