Supplied video obtained Thursday, January 16, 2020 of remote firefighters working to save prehistoric Wollemi Pines around the Gospers Mountain bushfire. Situated deep in the Wollemi National Park, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and NSW Rural Fire Service monitored the fire as it approached the pines, earlier placing fire retardant and an irrigation system around each of the trees. An assessment carried out by the NSW Government has concluded that while a number of the trees were charred, the species has so far survived the bushfire crisis affecting large parts of Australia.
