Thousands evacuated from communities up and down the New South Wales South Coast, on Thursday, January 2, ahead of extreme fire conditions predicted in the already bushfire-ravaged region on Saturday, January 4. Residents and holidaymakers in communities near Batemans Bay, down to the Victorian border, were ordered to “leave before this Saturday” when “widespread extreme fire danger” was forecast, an alert from the state’s Rural Fire Service said. This footage shows traffic on the Princes Highway exiting Ulladulla on January 2. About four out-of-control fires were burning on the South Coast including the 258,000-hectare Currowan fire. At least 1,298 homes had been destroyed across the state during the bushfire season, as at January 2, the NSW RFS said. Credit: Elise Franklin via Storyful
