The decision by France to withdraw ambassadors from Australia and the US is an attempt by President Macron to put on a strong face as he heads into an election cycle, according to Washington Examiner White House correspondent Christian Datoc. France's response comes after the AUKUS agreement ended the $90 billion submarine contract. French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said the move was justified by the “exceptional gravity” of the AUKUS alliance announcement. "This is President Macron trying to put on a strong face heading into an election," Mr Datoc told Sky News Australia. "There might be some type of boiler plate moment at the UN next week but at the moment it does appear to be France trying to prop themselves up at least to his electors, President Macron that is."
