Angela Merkel leaves behind legacy but remains to be judged by history

Outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel inherited a very stagnant German economy when she rose to power – now it is the fourth largest in the world, according to RMIT International Politics expert Dr Maren Klein. It comes as Germany held its national election today to decide who will replace Angela Merkel – as her time leading the nation comes to a close after 16 years. Dr Klein said Ms Merkel would be remembered for many things amid her tenure as leader of the German people. "She will also definitely be remembered for things like getting out of nuclear energy after Fukushima, she will be remembered for her, in particular, her actions in the 2015 migration crisis," she told Sky News Australia. "However, that is also one of the events that put her at odds with her own party – so it's certainly her legacy but how that's going to be judged by history – well it's history in the making we don't know yet."
