Olympian Aly Raisman Gives Statement to Senate Judiciary Committee in FBI-Nassar Investigation

US Olympic gymnasts testified before Congress on Wednesday, September 15, sharing raw accounts of the years of sexual abuse they endured at the hands of convicted sex offender Larry Nassar, the former USA Gymnastics team physician. The opening statements were part of a Senate Judiciary inquiry into the FBI’s investigation into allegations of Nassar’s sexual abuse. Aly Raisman, who won gold with the Olympic team in 2012 and again in 2016, shared an opening statement and answered senators’ questions on Wednesday in video shared by CSPAN. She was the last of four gymnasts to speak, following Simone Biles, McKayla Maroney, and Maggie Nichols. “Why must we speculate when the facts are obtainable and the stakes are so high?” Raisman asked. “I can’t tell you how horrifying it is to meet young girls who look up to me, who watched me compete in the Olympics and tell me that they went to see Nassar because of me and my teammates,” Raisman said to Connecticut Sen Richard Blumenthal. Nassar also worked for Michigan State University as a doctor. He was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison and was accused of sexual abuse by more than 150 women and girls.
