Fresh lava coming from La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano reached the sea on November 16, the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute (Involcan) said. Since eruptions began on September 19, lava flows have covered more than 1,000 hectares (roughly 3.95 square miles), and destroyed 2,618 buildings, the European Union’s Copernicus satellite program said. The volcano claimed its first life on November 12, when a 72-year-old man fell through the roof of an ash-covered building. Credit: Involcan via Storyful
