La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano spewed a billowing cloud of gas and ash on November 19, two months after its initial eruption. Spain’s National Geographic Institute announced that Friday’s volcanic activity included a magnitude-5.1 earthquake, the strongest since eruptions began on September 19. In the last two months, lava flows have covered more than 1,042 hectares (roughly 4 square miles), and destroyed 2,623 buildings, the European Union’s Copernicus satellite program said. The volcano claimed its first life last week, when a 72-year-old man fell through the roof of an ash-covered building on La Palma. This timelapse footage was posted by Twitter user @efadi_LP.
